Correspondence and other papers. Garnett's letters mostly concern family matters, but also include letters from Henry St. George Tucker commenting on the administrations of presidents Jefferson and Madison and on American foreign policy. Correspondence of Garnett's great-grandson, James Mercer (1840-1916), philologist and educator, of Baltimore, describes his experiences while studying in Germany, 1869-1870. Includes a four volume manuscript account of the younger Garnett's Civil War experiences as a Confederate officer.
